WHAT IS THE ED KEATING CENTER
The Ed Keating Center was established in August, 1998 by founders, Jack Mulhall, Phyllis Eisele-Curran and Dennis Eckersley.
The Center continues the founders’ long time purpose and a critical community mission demanding that the sober living opportunity be available to any man who has the wil1ingness to change, regardless of his’ ability to provide monetary funds.
In 1991, Jack Mulhall and Phyllis Eisele-Curran departed Stella-Maris to create Freedom House. Seven years later, Jack and Phyllis created The Ed Keating Center. The demand today for sober living facilities is serious and the need for a mission like The Ed Keating Center is particularly critical.
Why the changes? Over time founding principles of organizations carrying out this type of work can easily change. While it is a new enterprise, it was founded in order to continue essential principles shared by its founders that the alcoholic’s only qualification for receiving help should be conducted as a private effort, relying upon men helping men without direct public assistance. When, within their previous organizations a different operating philosophy was accepted, it was the founders belief that these important principles could only be maintained by establishing a new operation. For too many men finally ready and committed to turn their lives away from alcohol and drugs the answer to their plea for help is “What are you able to pay?’
WHAT IS THE ED KEATING CENTER DIFFERENCE
What separates The Ed Keating Center from similar organizations is an operating philosophy which insists that:
A.) Sober living should Be available to any person who has a genuine determination to overcome their alcoholism or addiction without regard for their ability to pay for the help they require.
B,) This should be provided without the direct assistance of any local, state or federal agency, depending instead upon the private support of individuals and organizations who believe in communities helping themselves.
There are numerous options available to the man with the means to pay for alcohol or drug abuse treatment for those who have only the determination to become sober, there is The Ed Keating Center.
“HOW DOES THE ED KEATING CENTER OPERATE?
The Ed Keating Center is sustained through a combination of limited spending and upon public support. Following the principles of Ed Keating and the founders of this facility ,this mission shall operate according to the concept and willingness men helping men in a totally private effort. Through the intensive effort of volunteers and a strong make-do philosophy, our spending is limited, and efficient, Except for certain necessary professional services, we undertake only what we can do ourselves. For example we retain no outside agency for fund-raising activities. More than 90% of the contributions we receive go directly to the funding of our Sober Living Facility.
To date, individuals and organizations, mainly through direct donations and support of our various fund-raising events, have contributed all of the revenue needed to operate The Ed Keating Center. The Center depends upon the generosity of individuals and organizations for not only financial support, but also for always needed materials and the valuable gift of individuals time and effort as well.
